Beaches in Lanzarote

Lanzarote offers a great variety of white, golden or also black sand beaches and everybody will find its favorite. In the South and Southeast of quiet waters, and in the north and North West with rather rough water and waves that can surpass 3 meters especially in wintertime. The waves in Lanzarote are world famous and ideal for surfing, body boarding, kite- and windsurfing. The water temperature varies between 17 and 19 ºC in winter- and 22 and 25 ºC in summertime. In continuation we will introduce you to the most important beaches on the island.

Puerto del Carmen

Playa Grande, is more than 1 km long and 100 m. s wide. It is very frequented, supervised by lifeguards and counts on showers, toilets, rent of beach chairs, parasols, boats and equipment for nautical sports.

The beach of Los Pocillos is of very fine golden sand and situated next to an urbanization with the same name. It is more than 1 km long and 150 m. s wide. The beach is quite windy, but of calm waters and offers excellent conditions for Windsurfers. You can even reach the beach by public bus.

Playa de Matagorda, is situated next to a tourist urbanization with the same name and is about 850 m. s long and 40 m.x wide. The beach is of very fine golden sand and as Playa de los Pocillos, very windy. The conditions for Wind and Kitesurfing can be quite good eventhough the wind is usually very gusty and blowing off-shore.

Playa Honda, Lanzarote

The Playa de Guacimeta is situated next to the Airport with the same name. The beach is of brown sand, easy to access and frequented by Windsurfers.

Playa Honda, is almost 2 km long and about 100 m. s wide. Playa Honda is one of the beaches that belongs to the area of San Bartolome and is situated close to the airport; next to the Guacimeta Beach. It is of golden sand and perfect for swimming as its waters are very calm. The wind is usually quite strong but also gusty and not ideal for Kite- or Windsurfing.

Arrecife, Lanzarote

El Reducto is the biggest beach in Arrecife. It is of fine white sand and very calm waters due to a reef that protects the beach from entering waves. It´s about 500 m. s long and 50 m. s wide

El Cable is another calm beach just a couple of km. s south of Arrecife. It is of fine white sand, about 300 m. s long and 20 m. s wide.

Costa Teguise, Lanzarote

Playa las Cucharas is about 600 m. s long, of golden fine sand with very calm water and sheltered by jetties. It is famous and ideal for Windsurfing; so why don’t you have a go in one the Windsurfing Schools.

Playa Bastián is situated in the heart of Costa Teguise. The beach is about 500 m. s long and 20 m. s wide. It is of fine white sand combined with picon and usually very windy but of calm waters and ideal for swimming.

Charco de Palo, Lanzarote

Playa Charco de Palo Near the village of Mala on the northeast coast lies idyllic Charco de Palo, a tranquil nudist reserved resort, which opens out to the Atlantic, thus guaranteeing complete privacy.

Arrieta, Lanzarote

Playa de la Garita is Arrietas main beach and is about 800 m. s long and 20 m. s wide. It´s of fine golden sand and ideal for swimming.

Orzola, Lanzarote

Playa del Risco is one of the most quiet beaches on the island due to its difficult access - by boat from Orzola or Graciosa or by walking down the Famara cliffs. The beach has invaluable historic importance due the presence of Las Salinas del Rio, the oldest salt flats of the island, which are nowadays closed. It is also an archeological site of prehistoric remains. Please bring enough water and food as the beach does not have any restaurants.
Caletón Blanco which means creek in Spanish, is situated close to órzola, and about 500 m. s long and 20 m. s wide. The beach is of white sand that gives a strong contrast to the black lava rocks and green bushes. Although in a rural area it has easy access including by guagua (bus).
Services: Parking and Bars - Camping can be arranged by prior permission from the Lanzarote Town Council (Cabildo).
Playa de los Jameos also known as La Caleta is situated just next to Jameos del Agua and very famous for surfing and Windsurfing. The beach is a couple of hundred meters long and due to its proximate reef not very attractive and sometimes even dangerous for swimming.
Playa de la Cantería is known as an ideal place to start surfing. The beach is close to the village of Orzola and only accessible over a dirt track.

Famara, Lanzarote

Playa de Famara, is about 2 km. s long and about 100 m. s wide depending on the tide. The beach is usually very windy and the water is never calm. It is of fine golden sand mixed with rocks. This beach is ideal for surfing all year round. Towards the end of the beach you will find the Kitesurf area. If you are interested in surfing or kitesurfing just visit one of the Schools in the nearby village. Always be aware of the strong currents. This beach can be very dangerous for swimming. Lifeguards are only on the beach during the summer months. Servicess: Parking, signaling, accommodation, surf- and kiteschools.

La Santa, Lanzarote

La Laguna is an artificial lagoon surrounded by a fine white sand beach. It is situated next to Club La Santa, a world famous Sport Resort. The water is always calm, as it is closed to the open ocean and ideal for kayaking or just relaxing after a fine meal in the village of La Santa.

El Golfo

La Playa de Janubio is a black sand beach, situated next to the well-known salt flats, Salinas del Janubio. It is not suitable for swimming due to its strong currents and waves.
Playa del Golfo is another 150 m. long black sand beach mixed with sand and cobblestones. It is found next to the incomparable village of El Golfo, inside the crater of a volcano, where a green colored lake has formed also known as the green laoon.

Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

Playa Flamingo is of fine white sand and calm waters. The beach is situated in the heart of the touristic zone of Playa Blanca. It is about 200 m. s long and 20 m. s wide.

Playa Dorada is situated in the east of Playa Blanca, this artificial beach is of fine white sand, 300 m. s long and 10 m. s wide. The beach is very well protected and ideal for swimming.

Papagayo Papagayo is thought by many people to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Spain. There is quite a steep slope to negotiate down to the beach itself so leave heavy items behind. The Papagayo beaches that lie in the middle of a Natural Reserve (entrance 3 €), are enclosed by rocky cliffs that jut out into the sea. The waters are incredibly inviting and ideal for snorkling and swimming. This is the sort of scenery postcards are made of so be sure to have your camera with you.
